Colts linked to former NFL rushing leader as potential landing spot

The Indianapolis Colts have no questions about who will be leading the backfield in 2024, but could they be in the market to add more depth?

As Jonathan Taylor enters the first of the three-year extension he signed during the 2023 season, there are no questions he will be the leader in touches.

But one NFL analyst believes the Colts could revisit a potential addition they had an eye on last season during Taylor's contract dispute.

In suggesting the top landing spots for free-agent running back Kareem Hunt, Bleacher Report's Paul Kasabian had the Colts near the top of the list.

"Taylor goes into this year as the team's top running back, and he's backed up by Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson. But if there was interest and an offer a year ago, perhaps the Colts would be willing to revisit Hunt as an option if they need help at the position," Kasabian wrote.

The Colts seem pretty content with their backfield going into the regular season. They liked what they've seen out of Sermon as a change-of-pace back to spell Taylor.

Meanwhile, Goodson has proven to be an electric back with some impressive receiving abilities. He also can work on special teams as the RB3 on the depth chart.

Hunt, the 2017 rushing champion, hasn't looked like a viable over the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Over his last 32 games behind a stout run-blocking unit in Cleveland, Hunt managed a meager 879 rushing yards on 3.4 yards per carry.

Maybe the offseason surgery to repair a hernia will help Hunt become an efficient producer on the ground again but entering his age-29 season, it seems unlikely.

The Colts are always checking in on free agents, but it would be a mild surprise to see Indy add Hunt to the rotation.
