Throughout the offseason, the New England Patriots have held a quarterback competition between free agent signing Jacoby Brissett and third-overall pick Drake Maye for the starting job in Week 1.

On Thursday, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo held a team meeting and informed his roster that Brissett would be the team's starter for their opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Brissett entered the offseason as the expected starter with many believing the Maye needed time to sit, learn and adjust to the NFL before he took over, so this isn't a surprising announcement.

Earlier in the week Mayo stated that Brissett was the best quarterback on the roster but did say Maye out played him during the preseason. In their three games, the rookie completed 61.8% of his passes for 192 yards and a touchdown while the veteran completed 35.7% of his passes for 36 yards and an interception.

It's obvious that Maye will get an opportunity sometime in the near future, but we'll have to wait before we see him lead the team on the field in a game that matters.
