Cardinals could place veteran outfielder on waivers if slide continues

The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a very important win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. However, they remain seven games back in the Wild Card race.

With the deadline to place players on waivers in order to be eligible for the postseason with their new clubs approaching, the Cardinals might be a team that engages in such a practice this week.

On Twitter, Cardinals insider Jeff Jones proposed the idea of St. Louis waiving a key veteran bat.

"Today is the last day for MLB teams to put a player on waivers in order for them to be claimed and eligible for the postseason," Jones wrote. "Will be interesting to see if the Cardinals make that call on Tommy Pham, who has been fairly vocal about wanting a chance to be in the playoffs."

Pham was part of the deal that brought Erick Fedde to St. Louis. He was added in hopes of helping the Cardinals make a playoff push.

However, the Cardinals are now falling out of contention and are also unlikely to reach the postseason at this point. This could mean that St. Louis will put Pham on waivers for a chance to be claimed by a contending club.

Pham was a key part of last year's National League pennant winning Arizona Diamondbacks club. Perhaps another team that is flying under the radar could take a chance on the veteran outfielder and give him the opportunity to play in the postseason.

It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals approach the waiver deadline and if Pham is ultimately shipped out.
