Red Sox place rookie second baseman on 10-day IL with serious injury

The injury bug has been brutal for the Boston Red Sox all season, and things aren't getting any easier as they're three games out of a playoff spot with less than 30 games to go in the regular season.

On Thursday, Boston placed infielder David Hamilton on the 10-day injured list with a left index finger fracture. To fill the roster spot, the Red Sox have recalled infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.

Hamilton has hit .248 with a .697 OPS, eight home runs, 28 RBIs and 33 stolen bases this year, but he had been hitting a lot better recently. He suffered the injury on Wednesday while bunting for a hit in the bottom of the eighth inning. Tyler O'Neill eventually drove him in with a two-run home run to extend the team's lead to 3-0.

This will be Sogard's second stint with the big league club this year. In 12 games earlier this month, he hit .227 with a .550 OPS, six RBIs and three stolen bases.

It looks like Boston will have to rely on Sogard, Mickey Gasper and Romy Gonzalez until Trevor Story potentially returns from his injury that was expected to be season-ending.
