Lionel Messi has Inter Miami fans fearing the worst with fresh injury blow

Inter Miami fans might have to wait a little longer before they see Lionel Messi back in action.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has not featured for Inter since suffering an ankle injury during Argentina’s Copa America final triumph over Colombia.

Messi had returned to training with his Miami team-mates but footage shared on Friday courtesy of DTUSA showed the forward speaking to coaching staff towards the end of the session while touching his ankle.

After the conversation, according to reporter Jose Armando, Messi went to the side of the pitch to train along.

The scene places any participation from Messi in Saturday’s trip to face Chicago Fire in doubt.

Messi has been restricted to 12 MLS appearances for Inter Miami this season, although he has contributed 12 goals and nine assists during that time. His most recent domestic game came when he scored in a 3-3 draw against St Louis City on June 2.

In their superstar team-mate’s absence, Inter have been in fine form, winning seven out of eight in MLS play, although their Leagues Cup defence ended with a Round of 16 defeat to Columbus Crew.

Inter Miami are currently top of the Eastern Conference table with 56 points from 26 matches, eight clear of nearest challengers Cincinnati in second.
