The New York Giants signed veteran fullback Jakob Johnson from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced Thursday.

Johnson was part of the group of cuts to trim the roster down to 53 players earlier in the week. He then signed to the practice squad.

However, the Giants placed center Austin Schlottmann on the Reserve/Injured list , freeing up a roster spot for Johnson to return.

For Schlottman, head coach Brian Daboll said the injury isn't season-ending, but it's lengthy enough to keep him on the reserve list.

"It's weeks. He got rolled up on, so he's going to be out more than, I'd say, four weeks. Probably more than that, too. So, we made the move," Daboll told reporters Thursday.

Johnson has only been with the Giants for a few weeks since signing with the team during training camp, and while it was a bit of a surprise he initially got cut, it was likely more due to roster manipulation since he was a vested veteran.

The Giants are still rolling with three tight ends for the Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings, but they'll have some extra help in the run game with Johnson back on the roster.
