Safety concerns continue to swirl around the Philadelphia Eagles ’ upcoming regular-season opener against the Green Bay Packers , which will be played at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The most recent regard reports of raging wildfires in the Sao Paulo area that could potentially affect air quality and raise other health-related issues for the Sept. 6 kick-off.
Earlier this summer, rumors about the color green being banned for players and fans attending the game due to potential gang related activity were squashed by the NFL. The Packers backed that up Friday when they announced their threads for the season opener.
The Eagles did the same — announcing a brand new helmet and uniform combo that plays along with the home city’s no-green theme:
Corinthians Arena is home to the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians. The biggest rival for Corinthians is Palmeiras, who wear the color green. Fans attending the Eagles-Packers game in Sao Paulo next week will actually see signs that the color is “forbidden” inside the arena.
Perhaps playing along as a sign of respect, Eagles players will be showing as little green as possible inside Corinthians. Only the numbers and name plates on the white jerseys will have green, and the players are expected to wear white socks with black cleats.
This will be a brand new uniform combination for the Eagles. They debuted the black helmets during the 2022 season , but they were back-burnered for the fan-favorite Kelly Green uniforms. The NFL opened the door this offseason for teams to integrate a third helmet, and this trip to Brazil presented the perfect opportunity for Philadelphia.
It was during a June 6 appearance on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast that Packers running back Josh Jacobs suggested it wasn't safe to wear green in Sao Paulo, and that he believed it had "something to do with the gangs," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Those comments quickly went viral, prompting Jacobs to apologize . Spokespersons for the NFL did acknowledge the Corinthians-Palmeiras rivalry, but the league’s Tim Schlittner told USA TODAY in June that no color bans would apply to players and fans during the Eagles-Packers game.
The Packers will be sporting their timeless dark green, white and gold. The Eagles? They're keeping it strictly black and white. All business.
