Expectations could not be higher for Ohio State entering another season of the Ryan Day era. The Buckeyes are still searching for their first national title in a decade and enter the end of August as the nation’s second-best team, just behind Georgia.

With those expectations comes an easier schedule to begin the season, which starts with the Akron Zips on Saturday afternoon. The Buckeyes bring together a dominant group, which is led by quarterback Will Howard, who transferred in from Kansas State.

Day has decided to give up play-calling duties in favor of Chip Kelly, a move that he kept brief in his weekly availability.

But, Day does have expectations for Howard.

“We want him to run the team and be clean. ... Be sharp, take care of the football. ... In particular, in that first game, it's run a clean operation. It's taking care of the football, it's cadence,” Day said .

With how innovative the Buckeyes continue to be with its high-flying offense, in-game communication and sideline communication will be important as the schedule gets tougher heading into mid-October and November.

For Akron, it’s about remaining as competitive as possible no matter the score, as this is one of the few ranked teams it plays all season.
