New York Giants bring preseason standout back to practice squad

The New York Giants signed safety Gervarrius Owens to the practice squad, the team announced Friday .

Owens was one of the top standouts throughout training camp and the preseason before suffering a knee injury during the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions .

A seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Owens was working his way toward earning a roster spot before the knee injury kept him off the field for the final two weeks of the preseason.

Owens appeared in three games during his rookie season, playing 37 snaps on special teams.

In a corresponding move, the Giants released undrafted rookie free agent K.J. Cloyd from the practice squad.

The Giants have an interesting safety room going into the 2024 season. Jason Pinnock returns as a starter while second-round pick Tyler Nubin seems to have won the other starting role ahead of the Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings .

Third-year defender Dane Belton was running with the first-team defense before Nubin took over halfway through training camp, and the Giants used their waiver priority to claim Anthony Johnson Jr. from the Green Bay Packers following roster cuts earlier this week.
