The Seattle Seahawks were known as a defense-first team under former head coach Pete Carroll . His philosophy of playing tight D and controlling the ball was successful for a while, but over time it became clear that the offensive part of the game had passed him by. The truth is Seattle left a ton of yards and points on the field during the peak Russell Wilson years and afterwards, in large part because they never had a gifted offensive playcaller while Carroll was in charge.

The latest failure was Shane Waldron , who held the job three years and never had more than an average scoring unit despite having as much wide receiver talent as any team in the NFL and at least one damn-good quarterback in that time.

Watch Warren Sharp explain why Waldron should have gotten more out of DK Metcalf , Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

The offensive inefficiency is about to finally come to an end, though. This year the plays will be called by Ryan Grubb , who was one of the most-innovative offensive coordinators in the nation the last two seasons with the Washington Huskies.
