Savinho was ruled out of Manchester City’s Premier League match against West Ham due to a knee injury, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The Brazil winger has caught the eye with his dazzling skills in City’s opening Premier League wins against Chelsea and Ipswich Town but was unable to take part at London Stadium.

With Phil Foden also sidelined through illness, Jack Grealish came into the champions’ starting lineup.

“He didn’t feel good. He had some problems with the knee and hopefully with 10 days off he can recover for after the international break,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

The estimated recovery period suggests Savinho’s injury is not serious. However, he was also forced off at halftime after impressing in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea due to knee discomfort.

“Some disturbance in the knee,” Guardiola said at the time. “He said he knows perfectly why, he had it in the past. Apparently, it’s not a big, big problem. Will be ready for hopefully next Saturday.”

Savinho was indeed ready to play a starring role in the 4-1 defeat of Ipswich, but Guardiola will hope the 20-year-old’s knee problems do not become a theme of this campaign.

City opted not to add an extra attacker to their squad before the transfer window closed, despite Julian Alvarez joining Atletico Madrid and Oscar Bobb suffering a broken leg in training.
