What Mike Macdonald said about Geno Smith leading the Seattle Seahawks

The chemistry between a head coach and a starting quarterback is one of the most-important dynamics in the modern NFL. For the Seattle Seahawks , they have stumbled into an unusual situation between new head coach Mike Macdonald and veteran quarterback Geno Smith . Under ordinary circumstances, Smith would have been shown the door along with former head coach Pete Carroll.

However, Smith has played well above expectation the last two years and his contract is one of the best values in the league at his position. So, Smith will be sticking around for a while longer, even as the rest of the roster gets younger around him and is re-shaped in the image of Macdonald and general manager John Schneider.

Still, so far there haven't been any yellow flags surrounding this odd partnership, and Macdonald has nothing but good things to say about his starting QB. Here's what Macdonald told reporters about his faith in Smith following the team's latest practice.

Mike Macdonald on believing in Geno Smith

"I mean, the whole thing revolves around the QB, and, he's our quarterback. And we're excited that he is. Quarterback, obviously, is the most important position, but just like anybody that's going to go out there, I don't see how you could put someone out there that you don't have 100% faith in. And, they've earned this opportunity, but Geno (Smith), most importantly, he's right there, leading the charge."

Smith is entering his 12th season in the NFL, but his body hasn't taken the kind of wear and tear you'd normally expect from a starter over 30 years old. Remember, Smith was on the sidelines for the most part from 2015-2021 , so his body simply hasn't taken the kind of punishment that other 30-year old QBs like Matt Stafford have over the years.

That means Smith's true age in football years is significantly younger than his actual age (33) might suggest. While the Seahawks aren't in a rush to add years onto his current contract, it's not difficult to imagine Smith continuing to play at a relatively high level for several more seasons.
