As ABC began its broadcast of the highly anticipated college football showdown between No. 13 LSU vs. No. 23 USC, it showed broadcasters Kirk Herbstreit and Rece Davis in the booth.

It's no surprise that ESPN's A-Team was calling the big game, but there was an unexpected guest who popped up as Herbstreit and Davis broke down the matchup.

A dog asserted himself on TV and Herbstreit began to pet the furry friend on air. That left fans questioning where the dog came from and why he was in the booth.

LIVE: USC vs. LSU score, updates, highlights

Why was Kirk Herbstreit's dog in the booth for USC vs. LSU?

Herbstreit's dog, Ben, has become a staple of college football broadcasts, but his TV appearance caught people by surprise ahead of LSU vs. USC.

Herbstreit and Davis were getting ready to kick off the game when Ben popped into the booth and received some pets from the broadcasting duo.

"Ben's down here, sorry about that," Herbstreit said.

"He's just making sure we're alright," Davis responded.

"It's a big booth. He's just making his way around," Herbstreit concluded before continuing his analysis.

Ben was also present for College GameDay at Texas A&M on Saturday, making friends with Aggies mascot Reveille, a mixed-breed dog who is known as "the first lady of Aggieland" and the highest-ranking member of the Corps Cadets.

Ben has become a star, being featured on Herbstreit's YouTube channel with a special segment called, "Walks With Ben."

Herbstreit and Ben were joined by former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel in the first episode of the 2024 college football season.

It's only a matter of time before Ben starts barking off takes on television.
