The first three seasons weren't the worst of times, but they certainly weren't the best of times, either.
The New York Jets have built a Top 4 defense, but have accounted for an 18-33 record under the direction of head coach Robert Saleh. The once-promising 2023 campaign went awry when future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear four offensive snaps into the opener.
As the Jets struggled through a bevy of offensive line injuries and subpar quarterback performances, Saleh presided over a second straight 7-10 season. Seemingly granted a mulligan once losing his four-time NFL MVP, Saleh faces high expectations in Year 4.
Jets' general manager Joe Douglas suggested Saleh is up for the challenge.
"Robert's the same guy, supremely positive, and energetic, and open with his thoughts and communications. I feel like everyone's, with the more experience you have, more comfort you have, the better you get. I think we're all in Year 4, 5, 6 in our roles, and he's really grown into this amazing leader," said Douglas after setting the team's 53-man roster last week.
Douglas oversaw the hiring process that brought Saleh to New York following four consecutive seasons as San Francisco 49ers ' defensive coordinator, a stint that made him a hot name in coaching circles.
"He was always an amazing leader when he came in here, but just the way he can communicate with people, and the energy he brings every day," said Douglas. "I know I've talked about the team meetings at length when I go into how great they are. He's a great person and great coach."
With Rodgers back healthy at the controls , a rebuilt offensive line and All-Pro selections at every level of the defense, Saleh sounds confident in the Jets' ability to post double-digit wins for the first time since 2015.
"We've got a good football team, I know we've got a good football team and the results are going to be what they are. I just want us to show up every day with our minds on, ball ready to compete, and if we do that, I think the rest will take care of itself," said Saleh.
The Jets will lift the lid off their 2024 regular season schedule on the road against the 49ers on September 9 at 8:15 pm ET.
