Denver Broncos top WR lands on unfavorable list related to his contract

As the Denver Broncos gathered for training camp earlier this summer, one of the biggest storylines going into camp was the contract status of Courtland Sutton. After having a big year in 2023, he was looking for a bump in pay, but the Broncos were in a tough spot sitting on all the dead money from the Russell Wilson deal.

But Sutton said and did the right things. He never badmouthed the organization. He showed up to training camp and behaved like a professional. That led to the team giving him a new deal , increasing his pay as he desired. However, that deal is not seen as a great one in the eyes of everyone.

It landed Sutton on the "All Overpaid Team" constructed by Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report.

Sutton took the runner-up spot on Fowler's list, as he deemed the contract of Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals even worse.

Courtland Sutton caught 10 TD passes in 2023

The Broncos were in a tough spot with Sutton. Due to the inconsistency of former first-round pick Jerry Jeudy, which led to him being traded, Sutton remained the team's No. 1 wide receiver, a role he likely wouldn't hold on many of today's NFL rosters.

At the same time, he caught 10 touchdown passes last season, good for fourth-most in the NFL, and he was easily the team's most effective offensive weapon.

It's easy for someone like Fowler to point out that this wasn't the best way for the Broncos to spend their money, but the team is also rewarding a player for showing up on the field and producing at a level that helps lead to victory. If Bo Nix can get the most out of guys like Marvin Mims Jr. and Josh Reynolds this coming season, the money given to Sutton won't look bad at all.
