Giants lock up star third baseman with massive contract extension

The San Francisco Giants have already gotten a head start on their offseason moves in a big way.

Though several reports were suggesting the potential for star third baseman Matt Chapman to opt out of his contract this winter, there was mutual interest in reuniting on a new deal if that came to pass.

The potential for an opt-out is a moot point now as Chapman and the Giants reportedly agreed to a six-year contract extension worth $151 million, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN on Wednesday night.

The new contract wipes out the final two years of Chapman's previous deal with the Giants. It includes no deferred money and a no-trade clause, according to Passan.

Chapman's new contract ranks sixth in total value while his average annual value (AAV) of $25.2 million ranks fifth among all third baseman in Major League Baseball, according to Spotrac .

Despite signing with the Giants late in the process during the offseason, Chapman put together another stellar campaign on both sides of the ball.

The 31-year-old is slashing .247/.333/.445 with 22 home runs, 69 RBI and a 121 OPS+ in 136 games this season.

He's also continued to perform at an elite level in the field with seven outs above average (OAA), which is second-best among all MLB third basemen behind Joey Ortiz. His 4.5 fWAR is second-best among MLB third basemen behind only Jose Ramirez (5.1).

The Giants have a big offseason coming up, but they got it started on the right foot by extending one of their key players.
