Steelers QB situation labeled one of NFL's most controversial storylines in 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers ' signing of Russell Wilson and trade for Justin Fields has breathed new life into the quarterback position going into 2024, but the situation hasn't come without controversy.

Wilson was long expected to be the starter going into Week 1, but there were no shortage of people pounding the table for Fields to get the nod, and that won't stop until Wilson fully solidifies himself as the answer in Pittsburgh.

With that in mind, Yahoo Sports' Frank Schwab is labeling the Steelers quarterback situation as one of the most controversial 2024 storylines in the entire league.

Maybe this one won't get that hot. The Pittsburgh Steelers have two well-known quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields , but everyone by now knows they're both flawed. The Steelers were picking between two unappetizing options at the end of the preseason. Wilson won the starting job, but it has been a while since he has been an effective quarterback.

If Wilson struggles early, will the Steelers have much patience? Fields at least has shown he can make plays running the ball. It's not a quarterback controversy like Steve Young backing up Joe Montana, but a marquee franchise possibly juggling quarterbacks all season will get plenty of attention.

Wilson has faced an onslaught of criticism from the national media this offseason before even taking a regular season snap with the Steelers. One can only imagine what will happen if he struggles early on.

But the fact of the matter is, Wilson's history made him the best choice for a win-now team like the Steelers. If he can provide even a slight upgrade from what Pittsburgh had last season when it went 10-7 and made the playoffs despite a terrible situation under center, the Steelers could make some noise.

The good news for the Steelers is, if Wilson doesn't pan out, they have another option in Fields, although he obviously isn't guaranteed to be the answer, either.

Should neither quarterback work out, it'll be back to the drawing board in 2025.
