New York Jets' 'biggest weakness' surprisingly resides on defense

Many assume the New York Jets ' defense is poised to pick up where it left off and maintain its Top 5 status as the new NFL season kicks off this week.

The Jets have All-Pro talent at every level of the defense, but the unit also features the team's "biggest weakness" according to Bleacher Report . Listing to Top 5 weaknesses for every NFL team heading into Week 1, the BR analysis found safety as New York's top troubled area.

Although Bleacher Report failed to provide an explanation, it's likely their experts are turned off by the lack of known names in the Jets' safeties room. New York starters are former sixth-round draft pick Chuck Clark, who is coming off an ACL tear, and the undrafted Tony Adams, who enters Year 3. Although he brings little star power, Adams performed admirably in his first season as a starter.

At second-string, the Jets have 2020 third-round selection Ashtyn Davis and converted cornerback Isaiah Oliver, who was signed as a free agent this past offseason.

New York lost starter Jordan Whitehead in free agency and converted second-year defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse from safety to cornerback . Rookie safety Jalen Key, also known as Mr. Irrelevant, has landed on the Jets' Practice Squad .

Bleacher Report also identified the interior defensive line and edge rusher as potential weaknesses for Gang Green. The interior D-line depth will likely improve when injured Leki Fotu becomes available . Any questions at edge rusher will be answered when Haason Reddick finally agrees to show up . The two-time Pro Bowl selection is deep into a contract-related holdout.

The Jets ranked third overall in total defense (292.3) last year and eight starters from that unit are back.
