Brutal first quarter for Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles vs. Packers in Brazil

So much for all those positive vibes, and that record interception-less streak in training camp.

It was a brutal start for Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles in Friday night’s season opener against the Packers in Brazil. Philadelphia’s opening two drives of the season netted an average of negative 0.2 yards per play and a pair of turnovers.

The first one was on Hurts, who went 305 consecutive passes in training camp without throwing a pick this summer. He was intercepted on his second pass of the 2024 season, feeling the pressure and throwing a misguided pass down the middle of the field for DeVonta Smith that was easily picked off by the Packers’ Xavier McKinney — a longtime rival of the Eagles from his days a New York Giant .

The Eagles’ second drive didn’t go any better, marking the first time they really felt the loss of future Hall of Famer Jason Kelce. On third and 6 from their own 15 yard line, a botched exchange between Hurts and new center Cam Jurgens resulted in a fumble, which was recovered by Packers defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt.

Jurgens appeared to snap the ball before Hurts was ready, leading to some grumbles between the QB and his young center on the sideline.

The only good news for Philadelphia was that the two turnovers, both ending in Eagles territory, led to a pair of Packers field goals. Saquon Barkley and the ground game never got a chance to get going, netting 5 yards on five attempts, including a 5-yard loss on Barkley’s first run as an Eagle.

Give it up to Vic Fangio’s defense for holding the rope, but the opening quarter of the 2024 season sure was an ugly one for Philadelphia.
