2005 Rose Bowl: Texas defeats Michigan 38-37 on walk-off field goal

The Texas Longhorns and the Michigan Wolverines lined up across from each other on the gridiron in the Granddaddy of them all , the Rose Bowl after going 11-1 in the 2004 season.

That day, it was kicker Dusty Mangum’s 37-yard upright splitter as the clock struck zero allowing Texas to escape with a 38-37 victory over mighty Michigan.

Mangum was 73 percent accurate on field goals that season but posted five games of 100 percent, including against Michigan. He was five out of five on extra-point attempts in the game.

As reported on Burnt Orange Nation and told to Bob Ballou of KVUE, Mangum said of the winning kick, “I thought at that moment, I’m doing this for these guys, my teammates, they’ve been there for four years.

“My coaches, Coach (Mack) Brown, Coach (Jeff) Madden, all of the coaches that have contributed to my career and my growth, not only as a as an athlete, but as a person. And I thought, I’m doing this for them,” Mangum said.  “It was pure, pure, pure euphoria, happiness, for not only us as a program, but all the fans,  I mean, what a monumental moment in Texas football history and I’m just grateful and blessed that I was a part of it.”

It was the only meeting between the two storied programs, before or since. That is until this weekend, as No. 3 Texas and No. 10 Michigan face off again. Kickoff is at 11:00 am CST on FOX.

Texas is favored in this game on Saturday by 7.5 points.
