Mississippi State and Arizona State clash in their first-ever meeting for a Power Four showdown on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils are coming off a 48-7 rout of Wyoming, in which redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt shined. Leavitt, a Michigan State transfer, threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate start.
It marked a promising start for head coach Kenny Dillingham, who hopes to fare better in his second season at the helm of the Sun Devils. Last year, Arizona State went 3-9. Now, the Sun Devils eye the program's first win over an SEC opponent.
Though Mississippi State was projected to finish near the bottom of the SEC in the preseason media poll, the Bulldogs aren't a pushover. They handled Eastern Kentucky with a strong Week 1 showing, winning 56-7.
Senior quarterback Blake Shapen, a three-year player at Baylor, notched four total touchdowns and 247 passing yards in his Bulldogs debut.
