Yankees' embattled infielder named 'great fit' for NL team in free agency

As the New York Yankees make a push for the playoffs, second baseman Gleyber Torres has a cloudy future with the team.

Set to enter free agency for the first time in his career, Torres has had a roller coaster of a season. From multiple benchings early in the season to producing consistently as the team's leadoff batter over the last month, it's been a wild ride for Torres.

Considering the Yankees' need to re-sign Juan Soto a potentially historic contract this offseason, there may not be enough to go around to also re-sign Torres.

Thus, the embattled second baseman was predicted to sign with the San Francisco Giants in free agency by Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report , who called the National League team a great fit.

"The Giants have struggled to reel in their top targets in free agency in recent years, but they look like a great fit for second baseman Gleyber Torres if the Yankees decide to move on from him this winter," Reuter wrote.

The Yankees already have a contingency plan in place if Torres leaves this winter. They could move current third baseman Jazz Chisholm over the second base, which is more of a natural position for him.

Torres has had his ups-and-downs at the plate this season, but he's really turned it on since being moved back to the leadoff spot on Aug. 16.

In 19 games since then, Torres is hitting .309 with two home runs, nine RBI, 15 runs scored and a .851 OPS.

His struggles in the field continue to loom large, but most teams will put up with poor defense if they're getting offensive production in return.

It will be an interesting offseason for Torres, especially since there's a strong chance he doesn't return.

The Yankees have so many holes in their lineup, they could address at least 3 of them with the money they will throw at just Soto.
