If iron sharpens iron for coaches the same way it does for NFL players, the Seattle Seahawks may soon have the best playcallers on both sides of the ball on their staff. New head coach Mike Macdonald is regarded as a defensive genius and one of the most-gifted defensive playcallers in the sport today. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb is considered one of the top offensive minds in the game.

In theory, they'll force each other to get better as they compete every day at practice.  Here's what Grubb told reporters about facing off against Macdonald's nasty defense earlier this week at the VMAC.

Seahawks OC Ryan Grubb on practicing vs. Mike Macdonald

"Oh, he's a pain in the ass. Mike's a pain in the ass, man. It is fun, though. It's a lot of fun. I think he's extremely creative on challenging quarterbacks and what they're seeing and what they think's happening. He gets his guys to play fast running to the ball, be technique-sound. So not only are they complex and deep in what they do, but I think they're fundamentally sound, which is great for us and forces us to be the same."

If you're a Seahawks fan and this isn't music to your ears, we don't know how to help you. Former head coach Pete Carroll deserves a lot of credit for keeping this team competitive as long as he did, but there's a long way between competing and being a contender. Based on the strength of their new coaching staff, we believe this team is about to be the latter again for the first time in almost a decade.

Macdonald and Grubb may also be each other's best competition the first few weeks of the season. Tomorrow the Seahawks host the Denver Broncos in their season opener and then they travel to face the New England Patriots in Week 2. There are many analysts who consider those two teams the worst in the AFC, if not the entire league.

The Seahawks will finally get a couple of real challenges starting Week 3 when Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins visit, followed by their annual trip to face the Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football in Week 4.
