Red Sox closer dealing with injury that could shut him down for a while

The Boston Red Sox earned a 3-1 win on Friday night against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park, but even when there's good news, bad news must follow for the club this year.

Speaking with The Boston Globe's Julian McWilliams , Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen disclosed an injury that he's dealing with.

“I won’t pitch until this [calms] down,” Jansen said on Friday.

Jansen's last outing was arguably his worst of the season, as he recorded just one out and allowed a single, three walks and a run. Rich Hill followed and allowed all three of his inherited runners to score, leaving Jansen with four earned runs allowed.

The 36-year-old had a rough start to the season, but he's converted 25 of his 29 save opportunities.

After being an All-Star last season and having a case for the same honors earlier in 2024, his 3.70 ERA this year is the second-worst of his career.

Boston went with Josh Winckowski to close out Friday's win over Chicago, and they have some interesting pieces to try and put things together in the late innings now, including right-hand reliever Luis Guerrero, who was recently called up from Triple-A Worcester.
