Red Sox waste strong debut from rookie, fall 7-2 to White Sox in finale

On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox hosted the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park for the series finale, and they fell 7-2.

Boston started rookie Richard Fitts in this third game, and he looked strong in his 5 2/3 innings of work. He allowed two runs (unearned) in that sixth inning after Triston Casas recorded an error.

The offense failed to show up again, as they scored just two runs both off of solo home runs -  one from Connor Wong (3-for-4) in the second inning and one from Wilyer Abreu (2-for-4) in the sixth.

As a team, they recorded just eight hits and a walk while striking out nine times. Wong and Abreu were the only players in the lineup to record multiple hits. Abreu and Trevor Story (1-for-3) were also both caught stealing.

After Fitts left the game in the sixth inning, Greg Weissert relieved, allowing an inherited runner to score. He surrendered no earned runs. Justin Slaten followed with a scoreless inning.

Zack Kelly got the top of the ninth in a tied game, allowing five earned runs while recording just one out. Rookie Luis Guerrero followed, allowing one of his inherited runners to score on a sacrifice fly and recording a second out.

This loss drops Boston to 72-71 overall and 33-39 at home. They'll take on the Baltimore Orioles for a three-game series at Fenway Park starting on Monday.
