Red Sox trade infielder to Mets for cash

The Boston Red Sox are four games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League with less than 20 games to go in their regular season.

With that, Boston has begun making some roster moves as they come to the end of their year.

According to MLB.com's Chris Henrique , the Red Sox traded Triple-A infielder Eddy Alvarez to the New York Mets on Monday in exchange for cash.

Alvarez, 34, originally signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox in 2014. He was traded to the Miami Marlins in 2019 and debuted with the team the following year. He signed minor league deals with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers in 2022.

The former short-track speed skating Olympic silver medalist signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox in 2023 and suffered a fractured foot just one game into his tenure. In 2024, he hit .247 with an .811 OPS, 18 home runs and 77 RBIs in 114 games for Worcester.
