NFL Power Rankings Week 2: Pittsburgh Steelers jump into top 10 after win

The Pittsburgh Steelers secured their first victory of the 2024 campaign in Week 1 with an 18-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

It wasn't pretty, but the Steelers were still able to pull out the win on the strength of sensational performances from their defense and kicker Chris Boswell, who nailed a whopping six field goals and made NFL history in the process.

With their win, the Steelers jumped into the top 10 of the Week 2 NFL power rankings of Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer , who has Pittsburgh at No. 9, two spots higher than where they were last week. Here's Iyer's thoughts on the Steelers:

"The Steelers didn't score a touchdown and started Justin Fields over a hurting Russell Wilson (calf), but the defense with T.J. Watt and the special teams with Chris Boswell were strong-enough support to take care of the rest in Atlanta," Iyer wrote. "Fields vs. Wilson now is a bigger storyline going forward."

I'd disagree with Iyer when it comes to his last sentence. I think there's even less controversy for the Steelers' quarterback position, as Fields simply didn't do enough to state his case that he deserves to hold on to the starting job if Wilson is healthy.

Yes, the Steelers got the win, but Fields wasn't impressive and it was clear offensive coordinator Arthur Smith didn't totally trust him, as evidenced by Pittsburgh opting to run the ball on a third-and-6 inside Falcons territory in the first quarter.

Fields was also shaky with his accuracy, even on short throws, and didn't look much different from the quarterback we saw when he was with the Chicago Bears .

The Steelers always planned on starting Wilson, and it's a plan they should stick with for the upcoming game against the Denver Broncos after what we saw from Fields in Week 1.
