The opening quarter of the 2024 season was absolutely brutal for quarterback Jalen Hurts and the entire Philadelphia Eagles offense.
According to PFFs grading system , it was the start of a career-worst performance for the Eagles’ franchise quarterback, even in a 34-29 win over the Green Bay Packers .
Hurts was the Eagles’ lowest-graded player on offense with a 29.8, the lowest of his career and worst since Week 18 of the 2022 season against the New York Giants (49.8). Marred by a pair of terrible interceptions, his passing grade was 33.3 and his rushing grade, on a night he ran for just 33 yards on 13 carries, was a 41.2.
It was clear that Hurts did not have his best stuff from the jump of Friday night’s season opener in Brazil. He sailed an ill-advised pass over the middle from his own end zone that was picked off by Xavier McKinney on Philly’s first drive of the game. On the ensuing possession, a botched snap between Hurts and new center Cam Jurgens resulted in another turnover at their own 13 yard line.
Hurts, who finished the game 20 of 34 passing for 278 yards and a pair of touchdowns, had a second awful interception, gifting one to Green Bay’s Jaire Alexander in the end zone to negate a scoring opportunity early in the fourth quarter.
Both of Hurts’ touchdown passes in the game came on gorgeous throws, especially his drop in the bucket on Saquon Barkley’s first touchdown as an Eagle:
Hurts also hit a dime to A.J. Brown that allowed the star wide receiver to do the rest with his legs:
But when all 76 offensive snaps were graded, Hurts bottomed out, in PFF’s view. In fairness, he may have been subjected to an extra-harsh grader, though. Saquon Barkley finished 10th among the Eagles’ offensive players with an overall grade of 58.0, despite exploding for over 100 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.
Here were the five lowest-graded Eagles on offense overall:
- QB Jalen Hurts — 29.8
- TE Grant Calcaterra — 50.0
- WR Jahan Dotson — 51.6
- WR Johnny Wilson — 55.3
- TE Dallas Goedert — 56.0
PFF dinged Calcaterra for his run blocking (51.3), which is a key part of his role as the Eagles’ No. 2 tight end. He was actually outdone in that area by Dotson, who earned a run blocking grade of 60.7 in what was a silent night overall for the Eagles’ No. 3 wide receiver.
Wilson struggled in his first 10 snaps as a pro, failing to haul in his lone target. Goedert was a distant third in the pecking order behind Brown and DeVonta Smith, but managed to secure four of his five targets for 31 yards in the win.
