New York Jets elevate familiar veterans for MNF opener vs. 49ers

The New York Jets are using their two weekly Practice Squad elevations on a pair of veterans ahead of their Monday Night Football season opener on the road against the San Francisco 49ers .

The Jets have made tight end Anthony Firkser and defensive end Jalyn Holmes available for the September 9 clash with the reigning NFC champions.

Firkser and Holmes were both in training camp with the Jets this past summer. The former signed on July 31 , replacing released fullback Nick Bawden on the 90-man roster. On the other hard, Holmes joined the Jets in 2023 as a Practice Squad player and subsequently made five appearances.

The 29-year-old Firkser could see reps as the Jets' third tight end on Monday night. After Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert, waiver claim Brenden Bates is the only other tight end option available.

Firkser, a New Jersey native, was initially signed by New York as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He made his NFL debut for the 2018 Tennessee Titans and proceeded to play 58 games over four seasons in Nashville. Firkser belonged to the Detroit Lions organization during the 2023 season and was active during their playoff run.

The 28-year-old Holmes entered the NFL as 2018 fourth-round draft choice by the Minnesota Vikings , totaling 25 appearances over three seasons. He has also played in regular season games for the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears . Holmes logged 81 defensive snaps last year for the Green & White. He'll provide an extra body at a position also played by Haason Reddick, who is still holding out due to a contract dispute.

In other news, the Jets added former Vikings' All-Pro kick returner Kene Nwangwu to the Practice Squad on Monday afternoon.
