Fantasy Waiver Wire Week 2: Jordan Mason and Isaiah Likely among top pickups and free agent adds

    By Michael OHara,

After having names like Kyren Williams, Tank Dell, Puka Nacua, and De'Von Achane on the waiver wire after Week 1 last year, the crop of potential pickups seems a bit thin this year. The names may not seem as splashy, but there are certainly a handful of players who can make an impact on fantasy rosters.

Be sure to check out our full waivers list to see where we stand on some of the potentially "trendy" names like Wan'Dale Robinson, Derek Carr, and Colby Parkinson. There are plenty of players who you may want to consider filing a low waiver claim for, but many are better suited to be picked up as free agents.

For the guys who are legitimately worth pursuing on the waiver wire (to be discussed shortly), being aggressive will likely pay dividends. Attacking the waiver wire in the early weeks has regularly paid off in years past and remains a strong strategy in 2024. Here are a handful of players who should be priorities on the waiver wire this week.

    Isaiah Likely, TE, Baltimore Ravens

Likely clearly impressed the Ravens' coaching staff after filling in for Mark Andrews down the stretch last year. Likely had 12 targets on Thursday night, the second-most of his career. He also displaced Andrews for nearly half of the snaps with just one tight end on the field, something he had not done in the past. The Ravens seem to have big plans for the tight end and he is a high-end waiver wire pickup this week. It may be too soon to start Likely right away, but he could very easily solidify himself as a weekly starter.

Jordan Mason, RB, San Francisco 49ers

Mason became one of the league's best running back handcuffs after the 49ers placed Elijah Mitchell on season-ending IR a few weeks ago. It didn't take long for Mason to realize his contingent value as Christian McCaffrey (calf, Achilles) was shockingly ruled out leading up to kickoff on Monday night. Adam Schefter also indicated that McCaffrey could realistically miss Week 2 as well. If this is the case, Mason becomes a locked-in starter in a matchup against the Vikings.

Demarcus Robinson, WR, Los Angeles Rams

Robinson is another player who stands to benefit from an unfortunate injury to a teammate. Rams' receiver Puka Nacua suffered a knee injury on Sunday night and was placed on IR as a result, meaning he'll be sidelined for four weeks at least. Tyler Johnson was the receiver who produced the most yardage after Nacua left the game, but Robinson is the player to target on the waiver wire. He earned a respectable seven targets in Week 1 and should maintain a steady role in the coming weeks. Robinson could reasonably a be WR3/flex option until Nacua returns.

Bucky Irving, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Unlike the other players on this list, Irving is more of a speculative pickup rather than someone who could be plugged into lineups next week. Irving has quite clearly won the RB2 job in Tampa Bay and is the direct backup to Rachaad White. It wouldn't be shocking to see Irving chip away at White's workload. White was highly inefficient last year and opened up the 2024 season with a game averaging 2.1 yards per carry. If White continues to struggle as a rusher, Irving's role will likely continue to grow as the weeks wear on.
