The San Francisco 49ers beat the New York Jets 32-19 on Monday Night Football to close out week one of the NFL season. Jordan Mason filled in for Christian McCaffery who was announced inactive just before the game.

Mason rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. McCaffery was announced as inactive with a calf injury before kickoff on Monday. However, in his post-game interview on the field with ESPN's Lisa Salters , Mason stated he was told on Friday he would be starting.

After the game, both head coach Kyle Shanahan and Mason took the podium for questions.

"I never told Jordan he was going to start," Shanahan said to the media. "I told him he had to be ready a bunch, but that might've been (running backs coach) Bobby (Turner) or somebody trying to pump him up. But I knew he was going to have to play a lot and I told him that he was going to have to, wasn't going to be like usual, he was going to be a number two back, that was splitting a lot of the time. But no, he didn't know he for sure was doing that until today."

Mason refused to answer a question about when he found out during his time at the podium.

"That question right there is why I'm mad," Mason said to reporters post-game That's why I don't really like talking to media because you say one thing wrong and then.... I don't know. Just skip that question."

In 2023 the NFL fined the Atlanta Falcons and head coach Arthur Smith for not being clear about the injury status of Bijan Robinson. The NFL could look into this situation as there is a disparity between when Mason said he found out he would be starting and when Shanahan says he told him.
