Detroit Lions urged to sign former Rams cornerback in NFL free agency

The cornerback position was one of the biggest concerns for the Detroit Lions going into the 2024 offseason, but general manager Brad Holmes addressed it in a big way via trade, free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft.

Holmes traded for Carlton Davis, signed Amik Robertson and drafted both Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. to completely revamp the cornerbacks room. With those moves, the loss of Cameron Sutton was quickly forgotten.

But one NFL analyst, Bleacher Report's Matt Holder , believes the Lions should keep adding to the position group by signing former Los Angeles Rams cornerback, Ahkello Witherspoon.

"Cornerback has been an issue for the Lions since last season and while the front office took steps to address the position in the offseason, Emmanuel Moseley beginning the year on injured reserve continues to make it a sore spot on the roster," Holder wrote. "Witherspoon is the best corner available at this stage as he's coming off a career-high 14 passes defended for the Rams last season. That'd be a welcomed addition to The Motor City and give the team another potential starting option in the secondary."

Considering it was the group's first game together, the Lions' secondary did a pretty good job in Week 1 against the Rams. Things should get better, so adding another cornerback isn't exactly dire.

But in a season in which the Lions have Super Bowl aspirations, it certainly wouldn't hurt to add more depth at the position, especially after the injury to Emmanuel Moseley.

In 2023, Witherspoon gave up a completion rate of 48.1% and a passer rating of 75.7 when targeted over 17 games, which are both very impressive numbers.

It remains to be seen if he'd be willing to take a depth role, but if so the Lions should consider adding what would be a high-end backup and someone who could step into a starting role and be effective, if needed.

Wow sounds like somebody that was calling for trading Jameson Williams for 2 3rd round picks for a 12th overall pick! What ignorant people don’t know or realize they have those four but they also has Branch and Kirby Joseph that can move up to slot or corner if needed !Now both those two DB /S are young starters with talented backup at safety !But let’s just take a spot they saw in the stats but not analyzing the team ! Just like the last 3-4 months reading about how the Lions should trade Williams and now we have to read how they can destroy their team by listening to people who can’t win a fantasy football league.
