Packers named as trade fit for former first-round quarterback to replace Jordan Love

It's going to be a telling week for the Green Bay Packers.

After losing their opener to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil, the Packers found themselves without their star quarterback. Jordan Love sprained his MCL on the game's final drive and could be out anywhere from the next three to six weeks.

There is nothing an NFL team fears more than losing their signal-caller, and Love looked like one of the game's very best last season. But there's no time to dwell on their misfortune, because Green Bay needs to start worrying about staying afloat.

Green Bay traded a seventh-round pick to the Tennessee Titans for quarterback Malik Willis two weeks ago, not believing in their wildest dreams that he would be starting games for them before the first day of fall.

Willis has not thrown an NFL touchdown in three starts and has never looked capable of guiding a team to victory. If the Packers want to keep their Super Bowl dreams alive, they may need to consider a trade for someone more experienced.

On Wednesday, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox listed the Packers as a fit for Denver Broncos backup quarterback Zach Wilson, the former No. 2 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft for the New York Jets.

"The trade market for quarterbacks might emerge sooner than later," Knox said. "Wilson had some impressive moments during the preseason that could stir up trade interest."

"The Packers won't have Love for the immediate future and might need a new quarterback to navigate the next few weeks. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero , the Packers "have not reached out and are not expected" to pursue a veteran signal-caller at this time. That stance could change, however, depending on how backup Malik Willis fares in Week 2."

Wilson, 25, is one of the most memorable draft busts of the past decade. In three seasons in New York, he compiled a 12-21 record, 23 touchdowns, 25 interceptions, and a dismal total quarterback rating of 33.4.

Though it wouldn't cost much to acquire Wilson in theory, because he's currently third on the Denver depth chart, the Packers would have to ask themselves honestly if he'd give them a significantly better chance than Willis to win a couple of games.

One week in, the Packers are already in last place in the NFC North. If they want to escape the cellar, they're going to need a quarterback to step up.

It remains to be seen if Willis is that guy, or if the solution will come from someone like Wilson who currently plays for another team.
