The 2024 NFL season just started , but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to look forward and project what teams might do in the future to help out their rosters. Every roster is going to go through a ton of changes between now and the 2025 NFL free agency period, but it’s never too early to think about what teams can do to improve their rosters going forward. Especially teams with promising young talent they need to build around, like the Washington Commanders .

It’s clear from the first game of the Jayden Daniels era in Washington that there’s a lot to like about their future quarterback. It’s also clear that there’s still a long way to go in his development. One way the Commanders can help further that development is to continue to surround him with talent, particularly at the skill positions. They did that somewhat with drafting wide receiver Luke McCaffrey in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft .

McCaffrey serves as a nice complement to veteran star Terry McLaurin, but the Commanders still have some work to do to fill out their wide receiver corps. The team could still use a big-bodied receiver who can provide Daniels with a dependable target in contested catch situations. Enter former Los Angeles Chargers and current New York Jets wide receiver Mike Williams, according to Bleacher Report NFL analyst Matt Holder .

Holder recently reviewed every NFC team’s biggest weaknesses on their current roster, and projected ways the teams can address those issues in the immediate future, in next year’s free agency period, and in the NFL Draft next year. For the Commanders, Holder would like to see the Commanders take a chance on Williams. Williams is currently with the Jets, but is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season.

If the first week of the season is any indication , Williams is likely to be unhappy in New York. Williams was active for the Jets’ Monday Night season debut against the San Francisco 49ers, but saw just nine snaps on the night. Williams was not targeted at all by Jets’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Should that continue, he’ll likely be once again moving on to a new team.

Williams’ skill set would go a long way towards completing the Commanders’ wide receiver room, provided he is and stays healthy. Health has been a constant factor in the 30-year-old receiver’s career, never playing a full 17-game schedule. Still, even if Williams were to miss a handful of games for the Commanders, it may be worth the risk to continue the development of their franchise quarterback.
