Arsenal fans might want to sit down for this one—club legend Robert Pires has weighed in on the ongoing debate about Bukayo Saka’s status as one of the world’s top wingers, and his verdict might surprise a few.

While Saka has been a standout for Arsenal, Pires believes Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku edges him out in certain areas.

Doku vs. Saka: Pires weighs in

Speaking to Wettbasis.com, Pires didn’t hold back when comparing the two wingers.

“In my opinion, Jeremy Doku from Manchester City is a bit better because he is technically stronger, has better dribbling skills, and is more imaginative,” Pires said. Doku, the Belgian international, impressed in his first season at City with three goals and 10 assists, quickly becoming a key figure for Pep Guardiola’s side.

While Doku’s flair on the ball is undeniable, Pires also acknowledged Saka’s talent but believes the Arsenal star is still developing.

“Bukayo Saka still lacks a certain level of consistency and experience, especially in the big games,” Pires added. He pointed to Arsenal’s Champions League exit at the quarter-final stage last season, suggesting Saka has room to grow on Europe’s biggest stage.

Sterling’s Arsenal move and what it means for Saka

The conversation doesn’t stop at Saka vs. Doku. Pires also commented on Raheem Sterling’s recent loan move to Arsenal, seeing it as a fresh start for the former Chelsea winger.

“I can well imagine that Raheem will be very motivated to start his new adventure. He hasn’t had a happy time at Chelsea recently, and it’s clear that he will show everyone what he can do,” Pires noted.

With Sterling’s arrival, Arsenal’s frontline becomes even more competitive, which Pires believes will benefit the team.

“The fact that Martinelli or Trossard have even more competition can also inspire them and prevent them from slowing down,” Pires said, adding that the extra competition will keep everyone on their toes.

Arsenal fans may be surprised by Pires’ comments, but it’s clear that both Saka and Sterling have a lot to prove this season. Whether Saka rises to the challenge and pushes his game to the next level or Doku continues his ascent at City, the Premier League winger debate is far from settled.
