Does Russell Wilson have revenge on his mind vs. Broncos? Steelers QB weighs in

The biggest storyline of the Week 2 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos is Russell Wilson making his return to Denver, but it will obviously lose its luster if Wilson doesn't play.

The Steelers quarterback came down with calf tightness ahead of the Week 1 game and was unable to suit up, which opened the door for Justin Fields to start instead. As of now, Wilson is trending toward not playing once again in Week 2.

When asked if it would be particularly frustrating if he can't suit up because the game is against his former team, Wilson didn't take the bait.

"I think every game matters, every game counts," Wilson said, per Chris Adamski of TribLive.com . "Every game you want to be able to play in. So, I'm just trying to get ready to go and rock and roll. Obviously, it's a big game for us because it's the next game."

When it comes to his Week 2 status, Wilson didn't give a definitive answer but feels he's getting closer.

"I feel like I'm getting closer and closer," Wilson said, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor . "I'm just trying to be smart and got to do a lot of work today on the field and everything else, throwing and all that, so just trying to be smart."

Wilson spent two years with the Broncos after signing a massive contract with the team, but things went terribly, leading to Denver cutting bait with the veteran signal-caller and eating a mountain of dead money , both in 2024 and 2025.

Wilson may not admit it, but all of the vitriol coming out of Denver and the national media that stems from his failed stint with the Broncos would no doubt make this a very different game than the average contest for Wilson.

And the same can be said for Broncos fans.
