Braves could pursue predicted $40 million star expected to opt out

The Atlanta Braves haven't had the season they have hoped for largely due to injuries.

While this is the case, Atlanta is expected to be right back up toward the top of the National League standings in 2025. The Braves have one of the deepest rosters in baseball and will get important pieces back before the 2025 season begins.

The Braves could lose one or two players this winter, though. Free agency isn't too far away and Max Fried will be one of the best players available on the open market. If he decides to leave, Atlanta will need to fill his spot in the rotation.

One player who could be an option at a much lower cost is current Texas Rangers star Nathan Eovaldi. He has shined this season for the Rangers and CBS Sports' Mike Axisa predicted he will opt out of his deal and become a free agent .

"Contract situation: $20 million player option for 2025," Axisa said. "Technically, Eovaldi does not have this player option yet. He'll gain access to the player option when one of three conditions are met...Assuming Eovaldi throws those final four innings he needs to get the player option, he'll then have to decide whether to take the $20 million and remain with the Rangers next year, or give free agency another try with his 35th birthday coming up in February. He is a beloved teammate and a clutch performer, but he turns 35 soon and he has a long injury history. There's risk.

"Prediction: Eovaldi throws the four he needs to get the player option, then declines it, tests the free-agent waters, and ultimately returns to the Rangers on a new contract. Perhaps something like two years and $40 million with an option for a third year."

Eovaldi has shoved for Texas this season and has a 3.67 ERA in 26 starts this season. If he becomes available, Atlanta should give him a call quickly.
