MLB insider suggests Red Sox trade budding star during the offseason

The Boston Red Sox dropped the series opener against the New York Yankees on Thursday night, falling to 4.5 games back of the third and final Wild-Card spot in the American League with just 15 games left.

With Boston's season likely coming to a close soon, they'll have to quickly turn the page to prepare for the 2025 season and beyond.

While the Red Sox will have a number of young prospects nearing their MLB debuts by Opening Day, the organization should still be looking to add proven, veteran talent to fill some of their biggest roster holes.

In a recent article, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal suggested that Boston should do that by training first baseman Triston Casas for starting pitching.

Casas, 24, is a star in the making. He missed most of the 2024 season due to torn cartilage in his rib cage, and he's struggled quite a bit since coming back. In 48 games this year, he's hit .241 with a .761 OPS.

However, when he's healthy, he's great. Last season, he hit .263 with an .856 OPS, 24 home runs and 65 RBIs.

The Red Sox need to add starting pitching this offseason to shore up a rotation that's been mediocre for a good portion of this year, but they can do that without giving up the guy who might be the team's best hitter. They can still have Casas at first base, keep Rafael Devers at third base or move him to designated hitter, call up some prospects and add veterans without trading a huge building block for the team.
