The outpouring of support for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the wake of his concussion suffered on Thursday night has been tremendous.

Just as notable are those suggesting it might be time for Tagovailoa to step away from the game he so loves.

Most notable among those calling for Tagovailoa to hang up the cleats, beyond Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe and others, is current Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce.

“I’ll be honest, I’d tell him to retire,” Pierce told reporters . “It’s not worth it. It’s not worth it. Played the game, I haven’t witnessed anything like I’ve seen that’s happened to him three times. Scary. You can see right away, the players’ faces on the field. You can see the sense of urgency to get Tua help.I just think that at some point, he’s going to live longer than he’s going to play football. Take care of your family.”

For now, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel made it clear on Friday that he doesn’t even want to entertain that topic of discussion while they focus on Tagovailoa’s health.

Tagovailoa exited Thursday’s loss to Buffalo after lowering his shoulder on a scramble in the third quarter, leading to a collision with Damar Hamlin.

Given Tagovailoa’s long history of concussions, Pierce might merely be the opening salvo as more throughout the league make similar suggestions.
