Week 3 NFL power rankings: Are Jaguars really among worst teams in the league?

The Jacksonville Jaguars ’ 2024 season is off to a disastrous start. The offense is struggling to sustain drives and score points. Injuries to key players are piling up, even in pregame warmups , for crying out loud. The team is 0-2 since the 2021 season, one marred by the hiring of Urban Meyer.

Is this Jaguars team, bursting at the seams with talent and widely viewed as an AFC contender through November of last year, really among the worst teams in the NFL entering Week 3?

After blowing a 14-0 lead to the Miami Dolphins on the road in Week 1, and stumbling to just 13 points on offense against the Cleveland Browns in Sunday’s home opener, the Jaguars are stuck in the basement of Vinnie Iyer’s Week 3 NFL power rankings for The Sporting News, dropping three spots from No. 24 to 27.

Here is Iyer’s take on the Jags:

Trevor Lawrence flashes with his big arm but otherwise can be very shaky. Travis Etienne is sometimes good with his running, sometimes not. The defense is all over the place like that, too. Doug Pederson needs some positive consistency, stat, for his team to avoid dropping hard from 0-2, too.

Is head coach Doug Pederson already on the hot seat ? It’s a fair question based on the current trajectory of this season. The offense has been a letdown in what was a pair of winnable games, and the Jaguars could easily be staring down an 0-4 start with upcoming road games against the Buffalo Bills (2-0) and Houston Texans (2-0).
