49ers could sign former superstar with Deebo Samuel out for weeks

The San Francisco 49ers have had some bad luck so far this season.

San Francisco hasn't had star running back Christian McCaffrey available for a game yet this season. Now, the 49ers will be without the services of fellow star Deebo Samuel. The star receiver will miss time due to a calf injury.

The 49ers can't afford to dig themselves too big of a hole and should be looking toward free agency for options to add more depth in the short term. One player who could fit this description well is former New Orleans Saints star Michael Thomas.

At one point, he was one of the most dominant receivers in football. Injuries robbed him of that, but he still was productive last season. He appeared in 10 games last year and had just under 500 receiving yards.

The 49ers don't necessarily need to bring in another superstar, but they do need depth with injuries piling up. Thomas seemingly is healthy now and could give Brock Purdy a dependable option out of the slot.

At this point, why not take a chance on him? San Francisco has had some really bad luck, but it still is one of the top contenders in the NFC. Once the team is fully healthy, it should dominate once again.

But the 49ers can't let themselves dig too big of a hole until the team's health improves.
