There may only be 12 games left in the Boston Red Sox' s 2024 regular season, but that doesn't mean everyone has given up trying to capitalize on this time.

Ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed relievers Luis Garcia and Lucas Sims are beginning rehab assignments with Triple-A Worcester.

Boston acquired Garcia from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline for a package of prospects, including Matthew Lugo, Niko Kavadas, Ryan Zeferjahn and Yeferson Vargas. The 37-year-old appeared in 11 games for the Red Sox, posting a 10.32 ERA and a 1.941 WHIP before landing on the injured list back in August with elbow inflammation.

Sims was also acquired at the deadline in a deal with the Cincinnati Reds for 19-year-old pitching prospect Ovis Portes. The 30-year-old Sims posted an 8.10 ERA and a 1.600 WHIP in his 11 outings for Boston before landing on the injured list with a lat strain last month.

Both players are set to hit free agency this offseason, and the Red Sox are nearly eliminated from postseason contention, so it's a bit confusing why the duo is trying to come back.

Are they trying to earn a job in Boston's bullpen next year?
