NFL analyst suggests Cardinals bolster o-line with two-time Super Bowl champion

After a hard-fought, disappointing loss in the first week of the 2024 NFL season, the Arizona Cardinals came back with a vengeance in Week 2 and got back on track against a division foe in the Los Angeles Rams . A week after losing a close game to the Buffalo Bills , the Cardinals and their offense found a rhythm against the Rams, exploding for 41 points and beating the Rams by 31 to get their first win of the season.

While the offensive output was great to see, and addressed a lot of issues from the first week of the season – namely the connection between quarterback Kyler Murray and first-round pick Marvin Harrison, Jr ., – there are still some concerns with the offense heading into the rest of the season. Namely their depth along the offensive line. Right tackle Jonah Williams was recently placed on injured reserve, and there is currently no timetable for his return.

Porous offensive lines have been a thorn in the Cardinals side for years, and protecting Murray has been a significant focus as he has returned from a significant knee injury. Murray seems to be back to his old self now, and making sure he stays that way should be the main focus of the Cardinals organization going forward. What is the best way to do that? According to Bleacher Report NFL analyst Matt Holder, it’s by signing a former two-time Super Bowl Champion.

In their latest column for Bleacher Report, Holder and fellow analyst Alex Ballantine have gone team-by-team to look at the biggest holes on the roster, and to suggest what each team can do to fill those holes not only in the immediate future, but also in next year’s free agency period and next year’s draft. For the Cardinals , Holder’s immediate answer for a fix to the offensive line is to sign journeyman offensive tackle Cam Fleming.

Fleming won two Super Bowls in his first four seasons as a right tackle for the New England Patriots . Since then, Fleming has gone on to play for the Dallas Cowboys , New York Giants , and Denver Broncos , seeing action on both sides of the offensive line. That versatility gives Fleming the nod for Holder over fellow free agent offensive lineman Charles Leno, who has strictly been a left tackle during his career.

Holder worries that adding Leno and moving current left tackle Paris Johnson, Jr. over to the right side would impact Johnson’s development, something the team would not have to worry about with a Fleming signing. Keeping that continuity along the offensive line is not only important in Johnson’s continued development as a left tackle, but in keeping Murray comfortable and giving him the opportunity for offensive bursts like the one Cardinals fans saw in Week 2.
