Jake Cousins injury update: Latest news on New York Yankees pitcher

The New York Yankees bullpen may have taken a big hit Thursday afternoon.

During the bottom of the sixth inning against the Seattle Mariners, Yankees relief pitcher Jake Cousins exited the game with the trainer with an apparent injury.

The Yankees traded for Cousins on March 31 in a trade with the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations.

The cousin of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins, Jake has been exceptional for the Yankees this season. Entering Thursday, he had a 2.39 ERA with 52 strikeouts, 20 walks and a 1.062 WHIP in 37.2 innings pitched.

    Jake Cousins injury update

The Yankees officially announced that Cousins exited the game with pectoral tightness in his throwing arm.

How sever this injury is will be a big factor in the Yankees' postseason plans. After clinching a playoff spot Wednesday night, the Yankees will rely heavily on a bullpen that's been shaky for most of the season.

With Clay Holmes struggling mightily to the tune of 13 blown saves this season, the Yankees are still searching for a potential replacement at closer.

Cousins has been part of that mix, along with Luke Weaver and Ian Hamilton.

It's likely the Yankees will have Cousins run the gamut of imaging and tests because he's expected to be a big part of the bullpen in October.
