Rangers linked to promising Mets slugger after strong 2024 campaign

The Texas Rangers chances of reaching the postseason are all but lost. After winning their first World Series title last October, they sit at 73-80 and are seven games back in the American League Wild Card race.

The offense is what has failed the Rangers this season, and in the offseason, they'll need to address it if they want to bounce back into contention in 2025.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post listed fits for New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso, who is soon to be a free agent. The Rangers were on his list.

"If not the Mets, the Astros, Rangers, Mariners, Orioles, Padres, and Cubs all work," Heyman wrote.

Texas already has Nathaniel Lowe entrenched at the first base position, so if they were to sign Alonso, they might be forced to move Lowe to the designated hitter spot.

Still, adding Alonso to a lineup that already features Corey Seager, Adolis Garcia, Lowe, and Marcus Semien would give the Rangers a good chance to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 season.

The 29-year-old slugger is hitting just .246 on the season. However, he has hit 34 home runs, knocked in 87 runs, and posted an .807 OPS, so he could significantly boost the Rangers lineup if signed.

Heyman notes that Alonso is expected to receive a deal close to $185 million. The Rangers would have to open their pocketbooks in order to sign the veteran slugger, but he would be a solid fit in Texas.

We'll see if the Rangers decide to give him a look.
