Giants executive expected to be fired after disappointing 2024

The San Francisco Giants have fallen short of the postseason for the third consecutive year. As time passes, their 107-win campaign in 2021 seems more like a fluke.

The Giants added Blake Snell and Matt Chapman last offseason, but those moves, while helpful, didn't turn them into a true contender.

Chapman has been signed long term, but Snell is expected to opt out and hit free agency again.

The team's struggles have led to speculation that President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi could be on the hot seat. R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports predicts that Zaidi will be fired at the end of this season.

"Zaidi appeared to be on the hot seat around this time last year. He was spared, signing an extension through 2026 while ditching manager Gabe Kapler for Bob Melvin. Zaidi was then afforded the highest payroll in franchise history, only to deliver another losing season," Anderson wrote. "Add in recent reports about how Buster Posey, not Zaidi, served as the accelerant to get an extension done with Matt Chapman, and you can understand why the industry has been whispering for a few weeks now about potential replacements in San Francisco."

Zaidi was hired in 2019 after spending several years in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. But he has not had much success in San Francisco, only delivering one winning season, which was also the only year in which he constructed a playoff roster.

This could ultimately lead to the Giants parting ways with him at the end of the season. The team is stuck in neutral again, and a fresh voice in the front office could finally help them get over the hump.

Zaidi has also been unable to land many top-level free agents. He missed out on Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa in 2022 and failed to sign Shohei Ohtani last winter.

It will be interesting to see what the Giants do in the coming weeks as they try to re-establish themselves as a true contender. But if they plan on doing that, Zaidi could be shown the door.
