Denver Broncos sign linebacker they should have brought in years ago

After working out with the team on Tuesday, veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander has signed a deal with the Denver Broncos to join the team's practice squad. Alexander, a fourth-round pick in 2015, will be playing for his sixth NFL team.

The Broncos have needed inside linebacker help for years and Alexander is a player who should have been on their radar at some point due to his ability as a tackler (he led the league in tackles in 2017) and the fact he can drop back and be effective in pass coverage. The Broncos, who have struggled defending the tight end position for what seems like forever, could have used that.

Broncos fans have called for this move before. I called for this move a few months ago following the injury to Drew Sanders.

The tipping point may have been Sean Payton, who had Alexander with the New Orleans Saints in 2020 and 2021.

Alexander joins an interior linebacker group that includes Alex Singleton, Cody Barton, Kristian Welch and Justin Strnad.

This is a great move for the Broncos. Alexander will start on the practice squad but don't expect him to stay there long. This signing will make the Broncos better at the position and make a stingy defense even stingier as the year progresses.

Alexander, a Pro-Bowl selection in 2017, has over 600 career tackles, 13.5 sacks, and nine interceptions. He is also still just 30 years old and the Broncos have determined that he still has something to offer.
