Former No. 1 pick remains a free agent, could Spurs be an option?

The San Antonio Spurs have been aggressive over the offseason looking to get back to the franchises' winning ways.

As the team continues to search for roster upgrades, the free agency market could offer them the piece they’ve been seeking.

“(Markelle) Fultz can still bring a lot to the table as a backup guard for a team that already has an established presence in their backcourt," writes ClutchPoint's Brett Siegel. "Keep an eye on playoff-contending teams having interest in Fultz pertaining to one of their final roster spots and a minimum deal.”

Fultz was drafted as the top overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. After injuries offset the talented guard's career in Philly, he was dealt to the Orlando Magic where he saw his best years.

In 2022-23, the Washington alum averaged 14 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.9 rebounds, while shooting 51.4% from field goal range. However, the Pac-12 product found himself falling out of the rotation last year as Orlando looked to give younger players an opportunity.

Meanwhile, the Spurs signed Chris Paul in free agency as the team desperately hopes to surround star Victor Wembanyama with playmaking. That said, San Antonio could benefit from a talent like Fultz on a cheap deal.

In a win-win situation, it would give the veteran a chance to prove himself while providing the team with depth in the backcourt behind the 39-year-old.
