Manchester United are considering a shock plan to extend Harry Maguire's contract as part of a bold long-term strategy at Old Trafford.

Maguire looked set leave the Red Devils over the summer, amid Premier League transfer interest in the England international, with his place at United increasingly uncertain.

The arrival of Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich has pushed Maguire further down the pecking order in Manchester with his contract expiring at the end of the 2024/25 season.

However, the latest update from Football Insider indicates the club will open renewal talks, as part of a fresh transfer plan.

Maguire's current contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and despite his £200,000 ($263,000) weekly salary, United are willing to activate their clause to extend it until June 2026.

The key reason being the club's desire to avoid Maguire leaving on a free transfer in 2025, as they want to recoup a fee for the 31-year-old, after paying £80m ($105m) to sign him from Leicester City in 2019.

Maguire does not feature in Erik ten Hag's plans, but the call would be made from a position of financial prudence, despite his lack of game time.

United will listen to offers for Maguire in the January transfer window, with West Ham United and Newcastle United previously linked with moves, and the Red Devils could be forced to accept a cut-price deal.
