The St. Louis Cardinals are watching October baseball from their couches after failing to reach the postseason for the second consecutive season.

An 83-win season was not enough for the Cardinals to avoid their ultimate fate, and they are now looking ahead to the offseason, where some changes might be made.

President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak is set for his final year in the position. On Sunday, Mozeliak provided an outlook for the team's offseason.

"Ultimately this offseason might look a lot different than the previous 17 or 25 I've been involved in," Mozeliak said. "Ultimately I think we will still have an exciting product to put on the field."

It appears that some changes are going to happen for St. Louis this winter. They've already announced that hitting coach Turner Ward has been relieved of his duties. Chaim Bloom will also take Mozeliak's position after the 2025 season.

Mozeliak wasn't exactly clear about what would be different for St. Louis this offseason, but the front office has described this current period as a "reset," which could mean that winning will not be the central focus.

Instead, the Cardinals could look to rebuild, meaning that they might trade away some players.

Sonny Gray, Ryan Helsley, Willson Contreras, and Nolan Arenado are players that could be shipped out. Helsley is entering the final year of his contract, while Gray, Contreras, and Arenado are veterans on expensive contracts that could be moved to shed payroll.

At the very least, it does appear that St. Louis is preparing to prioritize the development of their younger players. Even if veterans are shipped out, they do have an exciting young core to build around.

We'll see how they approach this offseason and if Mozeliak is proven correct about things being different.
